Ever found yourself staring at the alarm clock, knowing full well you need to get up, but your duvet feels like a warm, persuasive hug from the universe? Me too. But here’s the trick I’ve used for years, long before I knew it had a name: the "5-Second-Rule" or 5-4-3-2-1 method.

Popularised by American author and podcast host, Mel Robbins, (book info here), it’s a simple countdown technique that helps you take action fast. When you feel anxious, or hesitation creeping in, count backwards—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and move. It is more than just a motivational gimmick. It acts to interrupt negative thought patterns and prompt immediate action. The countdown acts as a mental reset, helping you break the cycle of anxiety, hesitation or inertia, and refocus on the present moment. It is based on the idea that our brains are wired to act on instinct and avoid overthinking, so it acts as a reset and launch sequence for action. Like pressing the launch button on a rocket, once the countdown starts, there’s no turning back.

Why It Works

  • Interrupts hesitation: Counting down gives your brain a clear cue to switch from thought to action.

  • Creates urgency: The countdown mimics a deadline—your brain loves a good deadline.

  • Builds momentum: Once you start, even with a small action, it’s easier to keep going.

  • Short-circuits overthinking: It’s hard to spiral into analysis paralysis when you’re counting down to go.

Procrastination, Meets its Match

Let’s be honest, procrastination isn’t often laziness. It’s usually fear dressed up in comfy joggers. Fear of failure, perfectionism, overwhelm, or just the sheer inertia of starting. The 5-4-3-2-1 method cuts through that fog in a direct no-nonsense fashion.

Here are some everyday scenarios where it shines:

1. The “I’ll Do It Later” Laundry Pile

You’ve walked past the overflowing laundry basket. You know it needs doing. But the sofa is soft, and the remote is within reach, you have that Netflix series to binge-watch... Try this: Count down—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—stand up and walk to the machine. Just start with one load. That’s it. Momentum will do the rest.

2. The Dreaded Email Reply

You’ve been meaning to respond to that message for days. It’s not even hard. It’s just there, looming in your Inbox (unless you use the 3-21-0 method - see last week's blog!)... Try this: Open your inbox. Count down—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and type the first sentence. You’ll be surprised how quickly it flows once you begin. And if it doesn't flow, AI agents like Copilot or Apple Intelligence will be able to help!

3. The Workout That Never Happens

You planned to exercise. But now it’s raining. Or sunny. Or you just ate. Or you have a sniffle... Try this: Put on your trainers. Count down—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and step outside. Even a 10-minute walk counts, and you'll probably do more once you're out. Action beats intention.

4. Creative Block

You want to write, draw, film, or brainstorm, but the blank page is intimidating... Try this: Open your notes app or sketchpad. Count down—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and scribble. The first draft is meant to be messy, but once the ideas start flowing, you be able to branch off and go on and on.

5. The Housework Avalanche

A busy week at work. Kids (and adults) not pulling their weight. You look around and think, “Where do I even start?”... Try this: Pick one job. Count down—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and begin with 5 minutes of tidying. You’ll likely keep going to the next job, and so on, once the engine’s running.

Real-Life Launches

I’ve used this method instinctively for years, even before coming across Mel Robbins' idea. Whether it was launching into a triple jump in athletics, bowling in cricket, before a set-piece in football (soccer), getting my hands dirty in the garden, turning the alarm clock off and getting going in the morning, and sometimes even socialising - it’s my go-to ignition switch.

It’s free. It’s fast. Easy to use. And it works in any situation.

Your Mission This Week

Next time you feel stuck, whether it’s starting a task, making a call, or stepping out to meet friends - count down from 5 and move. No prep needed. No app required. Just you, your brain, and a clear and direct mindset. Productivity isn’t always about planning, sometimes it's just about launching off in the first place.
